An Otago resident has won a life-changing $5.3 million in the Lotto Powerball, after playing the same numbers for five years. The practice started during the COVID-19 lockdown and continued ever since.
The winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is still processing the win after purchasing the ticket in Port Chalmers. The big moment came on Sunday morning when they heard on the radio that someone in the region had won the Powerball. Curiously, they checked their own ticket and were stunned to see the numbers match.
“I got all the numbers!” they said, recalling the moment of realization. After sharing the news with family, they celebrated with champagne and a homemade dinner to mark the start of a new chapter.
Although it hasn’t fully sunk in, the winner expressed immense gratitude for the win, saying, “This is a great moment in my life, and I’m very grateful for it.”
Looking ahead, the winner plans to take their time with decisions and enjoy life more.
